We’ve been telling you about the meeting Thursday, 2/25 at the St. Johns River Water Management District Headquarters on SR 100 in Palatka, starting at 5:00 pm.

It’s important that we have a large turn-out for this meeting.

The Melrose Water Association engaged an enviromental engineering firm, Water & Air Research, Inc. to review the application of the Little Big Sturgeon (LBS) Farm. The purpose of the review was to indentify enviromental concerns associated with the siting, constructing, and operating of the proposed facility.

Their findings are summarized in their report to Melrose Water Association as of February 17, 2010.

A brief quote from the report, “The St. Johns River Water Management District has asked repeatedly since the LBS filing for information relative to the stormwater and wastewater plans for this facility. They have been continually rebuked by the applicant; LBS citing their permit approval with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services does not require them to respond. Your Water Association membership should be very concerned about this lack of transparency and unwillingness to address stormwater and wastewater systems and their impact on the waters of Florida.”

The entire report can be read on-line at: http://melrosefl.com/sturgeonfarmreport.pdf or downloaded by clicking here.

Here’s an independent study which indicates this proposed venture will potentally have an adverse impact on our natural resources, specifically our water!

Spread the word and let’s all go to Palatka on Thursday and voice our concerns.

I attended the meeting in Palatka on February 25th and I was very disappointed by realizing how unprepared the Sturgeon Farm representative was! He could only present vague concepts and admitted to the audience that complete plans where not ready as of yet and offered very inadequate reassurances on some of the points raised by the audience; none of the points made by the audience was answered with factual or technical data. More frustrating and more disappointing was the disconnected performance of the St. John River Management district that had no real answers to many of the very critical issues raised by many residents who appeared to be much more informed than the members of the St John River Water Management District. After hearing all the comments made by the greater Melrose area residents it appears that this whole issue must be dealt upon with the utmost determination in order to finally persuade the St Johns River Water Management District that they must not grant a license to this project especially after constantly informing us that the water level of our lakes is at the lowest level in years and we must conserve water.

Hello! Your post (» Independent Study on Sturgeon Farm!) does so well that I would like to translate it into French, publish on my french blog and link to you. Unless, you have something against it? Regards

How can we stop this? Is there any person at SJRWM that we can contact to stop this? This cannot be allowed to be permitted! With the lack of preparation on the Sturgeon Farm shows how unconcerned they are about regulations or the safety of our environment. Thanks,

  4. First, I must mention that I am not a resident of Melorse. However; even though I live in Middleburg, I spend much time in Keystone Heights where my church is located (Keystone Christian Church), my Father lives in Melrose right on Little Geneva Lake and my twin sister and I work at Shake Rag Artists’ Collective in Melrose. We have been involved in the “Open Air Arts” these last 10 days which has afforded us opportunities to be out at some of the lakes to paint, take pictures and prepare our paintings etc. for this special time in Melrose. The reason I am listing a comment here is because I am trying to find out more and more about this incredible area that I have come to love so much. The people and the beauty of the landscapes, lakes and animal and bird life to be found here, (for now). I am so concerned about the Summary of Findings regarding the potential adverse affects of approving Little Big Sturgeon Farm Consumptive Use Permit #119244. As I read it and saw how little knowledge there is about the adverse affects and the fact that total disclosure of chemicals
and other contaminates is not known should send up all kinds of red flags to everyone who lives, works or visits here. At least do not give permits until ALL information is obtained. I for one know that if we the people don’t start keeping up with what is happening to the world around us, we will wake one day and find that poor discissions now will impact us so greatly that no “FIX” will be available, for we will have lost what is so precious. The life-breath for all of us greatly depends on our water. What we do now not only affects us as human beings, but all animal and marine life as well. I know how much my Family loves this area and even though I may not be a voting resident, I can voice my opinion whenever possible and plead for those who DO have a voice to get involved and know what is happening, then spread the word and pray that steps can be taken to save what’s left of our environment.

The Pen is Mightier Than the Sword!
In 1839, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, an English play-write coined the phrase, “The pen is mightier than the sword” as lines in one of his plays. Little did he realize the phrase would often be quoted, even into the 21st. Century

One of our local residents, David Beede is out to prove this with his writings and his songs. I’m sure you’ve heard about the proposed sturgeon farm planned to go between SR 26 and SR 219 on the East side of Melrose.

To learn more about this issue which is dear to all of our hearts, go over to David’s web-site, read his information, watch his video and listen to his song. It’s all at: http://www.davidbeede.com/proposedsturgeonfarm.htm

We all need to follow David’s cue and write Kirby Green to let him know what Melrose does or does NOT want in the neighborhood.
